Powder Coating Spray Alignment

Tool at Carrier

Parker Ionics Gun Tool

With the installation of a new powder coating robot came unexpected issues. An emerging crisis began to form when the nozzles on the spray gun became misaligned. A technician would need to carefully adjust them back into the orientation which the program was written for. This was a time consuming measure and it held back production. I was asked to create a tool that would make the task easier.

One problem I ran into was cost. Each of my tools would be frustratingly expensive to have made at a machine shop due to the tight tolerance. My solution was to request that instead of spending a lot of money every time we needed one of these tools to rather purchase a 3D printer for the plant and make these as needed. With the printer in hand I modified the design to allow for nesting which enabled 5 to print at a time.

Another necessary modification emerged due to variability in the orientation which part arrived to the robot. The existing conveyor was intended to be used with human painters. The robot is not capable of handling much variability in how parts hang. My solution was to have Bow wheels cut at a local machine shop which center the paint hooks ensuring a consistent orientation.
