TRI-WHEEL

An Engineering Design and Development class in high school was centered around building a project.

My project was designing this wheel which is capable of climbing over obstacles and driving on flat ground. It is intended to be used on emergency vehicles that need to crawl over debris.

The plan was to have the lower two wheels of the triangle powered by cim motors located in the custom transmission. When the wheel reaches an obstacle the axles powering the lower wheels are retracted. When that happens, motor power is shifted to rotating the whole wheel assembly.

After the wheel is done rotating the transmission reinserts the shafts driving the lower wheels.

I stopped developing this wheel when the class ended and additionally DARPA came out with their version.
